Alliance Members Elected to the National Academy of Medicine

 Members Carol A. Mason, Ph.D., Columbia University, Christopher A. Walsh, M.D., Ph.D., Children's Hospital Boston & HHMI, and Professor Peter Hagoort, F.C. Donders Centre for Cognitive Neuroimaging, were elected to the National Academy of Medicine.

Alliance Member Appointed to the Order of Canada

Judy Illes, Ph.D, University of British Columbia, was appointed to the Order of Canada for her contributions to the field of neurology, including pioneering research that has highlighted the ethical, social and legal implications of advances in neuroscience.

  
Nancy Y. Ip Joins DABI Executive Committee

We are pleased to announce that Nancy Y. Ip, Ph.D., Vice-President for Research and Graduate Studies, The Morningside Professor of Life Science, and the Director of the State Key Laboratory of Molecular Neuroscience at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, has been appointed as a member of DABI’s executive committee.

 
Alliance Members Elected as AAAS Fellows

The American Association for the Advancement of Science has awarded the distinction of Fellow to Alliance Members Stanley C. Froehner, Ph.D., Jeffrey L. Noebels, M.D., Ph.D., Margaret M. McCarthy, Ph.D., Vladimir Parpura, M.D., Ph.D., and Craig E. Stark, Ph.D., in recognition of their contributions to science, scientific leadership, and extraordinary achievements across disciplines.

 
Alliance Members Honored by SfN

Dana Alliance Executive Committee member Carol A. Mason, Ph.D., Columbia University, was awarded the Mika Salpeter Lifetime Achievement Award. The award recognizes an individual who has demonstrated outstanding career achievements in neuroscience and who has significantly promoted the professional advancement of women in neuroscience.

Mary E. Hatten, Ph.D., The Rockefeller University, was awarded the prestigious Ralph W. Gerard Prize in Neuroscience. The prize honors an outstanding scientist who has made significant contributions to neuroscience throughout his or her career.

Alliance Member Wins Sri Vanamali Charitable Trust Award

Vijayalakshmi Ravindranath, B.Sc., M.Sc., Ph.D., Indian Institute of Science, was honored with the 2017  Padma Shri Award for distinguished contributions in her field.


 Alliance Member Honored by National Academy of Medicine

Dana Alliance Executive Committee member Joseph T. Coyle, M.D., Harvard Medical School, was honored by The National Academy of Medicine with the 2017 Rhoda and Bernard Sarnat International Prize in Mental Health. The prize recognizes achievements in basic science, clinical application, and public policy that lead to progress in the understanding, etiology, prevention, treatment, or cure of mental disorders.
  

In Memoriam: Edward H. Oldfield

We are saddened by the loss of Alliance member Edward H. Oldfield, M.D., on September 1, 2017. He worked as a Senior Staff Fellow at the Surgical Neurology Branch, NIH, and later moved to the University of Virginia as the W. Gayle Crutchfield Chair in Neurological Surgery. He will be remembered for his contributions to the understanding of spinal vascular malformations, Chiari I malformation and syringomyelia, pituitary adenomas, drug delivery, nervous system neoplasia, gene therapy, and vasospasm.

 
Alliance Members Elected to the National Academy of Medicine

 Members Allan I. Levey, M.D., Ph.D., Emory University School of Medicine, and Scott L. Pomeroy, M.D., Ph.D., Children's Hospital Boston, were newly elected to the National Academy of Medicine.

Alliance Member Awarded NAM Mental Health Prize

Joseph T. Coyle, M.D., was awarded the National Academy of Medicine's 2017 Rhoda and Bernard Sarnat International Prize in Mental Health for research that "laid the foundation for integrating neuroscience and clinical psychiatry and shifted psychiatry’s emphasis toward empirically based brain research." 

In Memoriam: Jerzy Vetulani

We regret to announce the loss of Alliance member Jerzy Vetulani, Vice Chairman of the Scientific Council of the Polish Academy of Sciences, who passed away April 7, 2017. See the EDAB page for an obituary written by fellow Alliance member Malgorzata Kossut.

In Memoriam: Lewis P. Rowland

We are saddened by the loss of founding Dana Alliance member Lewis "Bud" P. Rowland, who passed away on March 16, 2017. He was a professor at Columbia University, former Chairman of Neurology and Director of the Neurology Service at Presbyterian Hospital, founder and co-director of the H. Houston Merritt Clinical Research Center for Muscular Dystrophy and Related Diseases at Columbia University Medical Center, founder and former co-director of the Eleanor and Lou Gehrig MDA/ALS Center, and former Professor and Chairman of the Department of Neurology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He will be remembered for his contributions to the understanding of neuromuscular and age-related neurodegenerative diseases. 
 

Alliance Member Awarded the 2017 Brain Prize

The 2017 Brain Prize was awarded to Dana Alliance member Ray Dolan, Peter Dayan, and Wolfram Shultz "for their multidisciplinary analysis of brain mechanisms that link learning to reward, which has far-reaching implications for the understanding of human behaviour, including disorders of decision-making in conditions such as gambling, drug addiction, compulsive behaviour and schizophrenia."

In Memoriam: Geoffrey Raisman

We regret to announce the passing of Dana Alliance member Geoffrey Raisman, who passed away on January 27, 2017. He was Chair of Neural Regeneration at the UCL Institute of Neurology, and elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society and member of the Academy of Medical Science. He will be remembered for his groundbreaking work, which improved methods of recovery for spinal cord injuries.

Alliance Member Awarded with SfN Lifetime Achievement Award

Li-Huei Tsai, Ph.D., was awarded the Society for Neuroscience Mika Salpeter Lifetime Achievement Award, which "recognizes individuals with outstanding careers in neuroscience who have also actively promoted the professional advancement of women in sciences" at the annual meeting in San Diego, CA.

In Memoriam: David A. Drachman

We are saddened by the loss of founding Dana Alliance member David A. Drachman, M.D., who passed away on December 5, 2016 at 84 years old. He was the founding chairman of the neurology department at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester. He will be remembered for his important contributions to Alzheimer's research.

 Alliance Member Wins Robert A. Pritzker Prize

Ira Shoulson, M.D., Georgetown University, was honored by the Michael J. Fox Foundation with the Robert A. Pritzker Prize for Leadership in Parkinson's Research.

 Alliance Member Elected Science Museum Group Fellow

Dame Nancy Rothwell, University of Manchester, was elected as a Science Museum Group Fellow at the Manchester Science Festival.

 Alliance Member Wins Jean-Marie Delwart International Prize

Joseph E. LeDoux, Ph.D., was awarded the 2016 Jean-Marie Delwart International Prize - Molecular and Cellular Mechanisms Underlying Mood: From Well Being to Disorders "for his seminal contributions to understanding the critical role of the amygdala in mediating anxiety and of the underlying circuit."

 Alliance Member Wins National Academy of Medicine Award

Steven E. Hyman, M.D., founding member of the Dana Alliance and director of the Stanley Center for Psychiatric Research, was awarded the 2016 Rhonda and Bernard Sarnat International Prize in Mental Health "for his leadership in furthering understanding and treatment of psychiatric disorders as biological diseases."

 Alliance Member Elected to National Academy of Medicine

John H. Morrison, Ph.D., University of California, Davis, was elected to the National Academy of Medicine.

In Memoriam: Allen Roses

We regret to announce the loss of founding member of DABI Allen Roses, M.D., FRCP, who passed away on Friday, September 30 at 73 years old. He was professor and director of the Drug Discovery Institute at Duke University. He will be remembered for his contributions to the study of dementia, specifically his role in the discovery of genes that indicate higher risk for Alzheimer's disease in otherwise healthy adults over 65.

 
Alliance Member Wins American Psychological Association Award

Joseph E. LeDoux, Ph.D., New York University, won the William James Award from the American Psychological Association for his book Anxious: Using the Brain to Understand and Treat Fear and Anxiety, published by Viking in 2015. The award recognizes outstanding contributions to scientific psychology.

Alliance Member Wins International Union of Psychological Science Prize

Alan D. Baddeley, CBE, FRS, FMedSci, University of York, won the 2016 Major Advancement in Psychological Science Prize from the International Union of Psychological Sciences at the 31st International Congress of Psychology in Japan for his contributions to the cognitive psychology of human memory.

Alliance Member Awarded Alzheimer's Association Lifetime Achievement Award

W. Sue T. Griffin, Ph.D., Donal W. Reynolds Institute on Aging at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, won the Khalid Iqbal, Ph.D., Lifetime Achievement Award in Alzheimer's Disease Research from the Alzheimer's Association.

Alliance Members Win IPSEN Neuronal Plasticity Prize

Members Pierre J. Magistretti, M.D., Ph.D., L'ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, and Marcus E. Raichle, M.D., Washington University School of Medicine, won the Fondation IPSEN Neuronal Plasticity prize, along with David Atwell. The prize, presented at the 10th FENS Forum of Neuroscience in Copenhagen, Denmark, celebrated their contributions to neuroenergetics.

Alliance Members Win Kavli Prize

Members Eve Marder, Ph.D., Brandeis University, and Carla J. Shatz, Ph.D., Bio-X, won the 2016 Kavli Prize in Neuroscience with Michael M. Merzenich "for the discovery of mechanisms that allow experience and neural activity to remodel brain function."

In Memoriam: Suzanne H. Corkin, Ph.D.

We are saddened by the loss of Suzanne H. Corkin, Ph.D., who passed away on Tuesday, May 24, 2016 at 79 years old. She was a professor of neuroscience at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and will be remembered for her in depth studies on memory, particularly her work with the famous amnesiac H.M.


Alliance Member Awarded Karolinska Institutet Jubilee Gold Medal

Torsten N. Wiesel, M.D., Nobel Laureate and President Emeritus of the Rockefeller University, was awarded the 2016 Karolinska Institutet Jubilee Gold Medal with Rune Fransson. The medal recognizes Wiesel's outstanding contributions to the university as a leader of advisory boards for the Department of Neuroscience.


Two Members Elected to National Academy of Sciences

Nathaniel Heintz, Ph.D., the James and Marilyn Simons Professor at the Rockefeller University, was elected as a 2016 National Academy of Sciences member. Christine Petit, Ph.D., was elected as a 2016 foreign associate of the National Academy of Sciences.

 
Two Members Elected to American Academy of Arts and Sciences

John L. R. Rubenstein, M.D., Ph.D., the Nina Ireland Distinguished Professor in Child Psychiatry at the University of California, San Francisco has been elected as a 2016 Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Nancy Y. Ip, Ph.D., Dean of Science and the Morningside Professor of Life Sciences at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, has been elected as a 2016 Foreign Honorary Member of the Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Alliance Member Elected to Royal Society

Pasko Rakic, M.D., Ph.D., Chairman of the Yale School of Medicine, has been elected as a 2016 Royal Society Fellows Foreign Member.

 
Alliance Member Wins Salk Institute Medal

Solomon H. Snyder, M.D., of The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine won the Salk Institute Medal for Research Excellence for his research on neuropharmacology.

Alliance Members Awarded the 2016 Brain Prize

The Brain Prize for 2016 was awarded to Graham Collingridge and Richard Morris, both Dana Alliance members, along with Timothy Bliss for their ground-breaking research on the cellular and molecular basis of Long-Term Potentiation and the demonstration that this form of synaptic plasticity underpins spatial memory and learning.
